The verses in which the Quran openly challenges all of mankind and jinn to produce something like it — a challenge that has stood unmet for over fourteen centuries.
"Then let them produce a statement like it, if they should be truthful."
Surah At-Tur 52:34Tahaddī (التَّحَدِّي) literally means "to challenge." In the Quranic context, it refers to the divine challenge issued to the disbelievers of Makkah: if they truly believed the Quran was the work of a man, then let them produce something like it.
This challenge is the cornerstone of I'jāz al-Qur'an — the inimitability and miraculous nature of the Quran. Remarkably, the challenge came in stages: first to produce a whole Quran like it, then ten chapters, and finally just a single short chapter. Even at its easiest, no one — then or since — has been able to meet it.

"And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant, then produce a sūrah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful."
اور اگر تمہیں اس کلام میں شک ہو جو ہم نے اپنے بندے پر نازل کیا ہے تو اسی جیسی ایک سورت ہی بنا لاؤ اور اللہ کے سوا اپنے سب مددگاروں کو بلا لو اگر تم سچے ہو۔
और अगर तुम्हें उस कलाम के बारे में शक है जो हमने अपने बंदे पर उतारा है, तो उसी जैसी एक सूरत ही बना लाओ और अल्लाह के सिवा अपने सब गवाहों को बुला लो, अगर तुम सच्चे हो।
"Or do they say, 'He invented it'? Say, 'Then bring a sūrah like it and call upon whomever you can besides Allah, if you should be truthful.'"
کیا وہ کہتے ہیں کہ اس نے اسے خود گھڑ لیا ہے؟ کہہ دو کہ پھر اسی جیسی ایک سورت لے آؤ اور اللہ کے سوا جسے بلا سکتے ہو بلا لو، اگر تم سچے ہو۔
क्या वे कहते हैं कि इसे उसने खुद गढ़ लिया है? कह दो कि फिर इसी जैसी एक सूरत ले आओ और अल्लाह के सिवा जिसे बुला सको बुला लो, अगर तुम सच्चे हो।
"Or do they say, 'He invented it'? Say, 'Then bring ten sūrahs like it that you have invented and call upon whomever you can besides Allah, if you should be truthful.'"
کیا وہ کہتے ہیں کہ اس نے اسے گھڑ لیا ہے؟ کہہ دو کہ پھر اسی جیسی دس گھڑی ہوئی سورتیں ہی لے آؤ اور اللہ کے سوا جسے بلا سکتے ہو بلا لو، اگر تم سچے ہو۔
क्या वे कहते हैं कि इसे उसने गढ़ लिया है? कह दो कि फिर इसी जैसी दस गढ़ी हुई सूरतें ही ले आओ और अल्लाह के सिवा जिसे बुला सको बुला लो, अगर तुम सच्चे हो।
"Say, 'If mankind and the jinn gathered together to produce the like of this Quran, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to each other assistants.'"
کہہ دو کہ اگر تمام انسان اور جن مل کر اس قرآن جیسا لانا چاہیں تو اس جیسا نہ لا سکیں گے، چاہے وہ ایک دوسرے کے مددگار ہی کیوں نہ ہوں۔
कह दो कि अगर सारे इंसान और जिन्न मिलकर इस क़ुरआन जैसा लाना चाहें तो इस जैसा न ला सकेंगे, चाहे वे एक-दूसरे के मददगार ही क्यों न हों।
"Or do they say, 'He has made it up'? Rather, they do not believe. Then let them produce a statement like it, if they should be truthful."
کیا وہ کہتے ہیں کہ اس نے اسے خود بنا لیا ہے؟ بلکہ وہ ایمان ہی نہیں لاتے۔ پس اگر سچے ہیں تو اسی جیسا کوئی کلام لے آئیں۔
क्या वे कहते हैं कि इसे उसने खुद बना लिया है? बल्कि वे ईमान ही नहीं लाते। तो अगर सच्चे हैं तो इसी जैसा कोई कलाम ले आएँ।

"But if you do not — and you will never be able to — then fear the Fire whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers."
پس اگر تم ایسا نہ کر سکو اور تم ہرگز نہ کر سکو گے تو اس آگ سے ڈرو جس کا ایندھن انسان اور پتھر ہیں، جو کافروں کے لیے تیار کی گئی ہے۔
फिर अगर तुम ऐसा न कर सको और तुम हरगिज़ न कर सकोगे, तो उस आग से डरो जिसका ईंधन इंसान और पत्थर हैं, जो काफ़िरों के लिए तैयार की गई है।
"Then do they not reflect upon the Quran? If it had been from any other than Allah, they would have found within it much contradiction."
کیا یہ لوگ قرآن میں غور نہیں کرتے؟ اگر یہ اللہ کے سوا کسی اور کی طرف سے ہوتا تو اس میں بہت سا اختلاف پاتے۔
क्या ये लोग क़ुरआन में ग़ौर नहीं करते? अगर यह अल्लाह के सिवा किसी और की तरफ़ से होता तो इसमें बहुत-सा इख़्तिलाफ़ (विरोधाभास) पाते।
"That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal to you. You knew it not, neither you nor your people, before this."
یہ غیب کی خبروں میں سے ہے جو ہم آپ کی طرف وحی کرتے ہیں، اس سے پہلے نہ آپ انہیں جانتے تھے اور نہ آپ کی قوم۔
यह ग़ैब की ख़बरों में से है जो हम आपकी तरफ़ वही करते हैं, इससे पहले न आप इन्हें जानते थे और न आपकी क़ौम।
"Say, 'Then bring a scripture from Allah which is more guiding than either of them, that I may follow it, if you should be truthful.'"
کہہ دو کہ پھر اللہ کے پاس سے کوئی ایسی کتاب لے آؤ جو ان دونوں سے زیادہ ہدایت والی ہو، میں اسی کی پیروی کروں گا، اگر تم سچے ہو۔
कह दो कि फिर अल्लाह के पास से कोई ऐसी किताब ले आओ जो इन दोनों से ज़्यादा हिदायत वाली हो, मैं उसी की पैरवी करूँगा, अगर तुम सच्चे हो।

The challenge eased in stages — the whole Quran, then ten chapters, then a single sūrah — leaving no excuse, yet still none could meet it.
It was issued to all mankind and jinn together (17:88), and remains open to this day — not bound to any one era.
